Again, I have been a b*tch…. sorry, bad person, when I dared to question one business consultant about his skills in social media marketing. When I’m consultanting businesses myself as a Digipreacher or when I’m giving lectures, I first of all try to find out what kind of audience I have. Then I try to stick to their needs and to the reality they are living in and give them handy, easy hints which can improve their social media presence instead of massive, expensive visions with the most up-to-date channels and tools.
This young guy today was talking to micro companies (meaning really small start-ups with only the owner to work there) about the social media and its power. For some reason this person thought that instead of giving good ideas and hints about social media and the different ways to use it, he should sell his company and himself.
He was telling about the newest channels and offering them as a solution to all businesses. He was telling that by putting a lots of money to the online advertisements is the only way of getting enough customers. He was also telling that search engine optimatization is so difficult, that it takes years of studying before understanding it. And so on – you get the picture 🙂
And naturally, only he and his company coud help a company with these things. So after the fifth time he started the sentence with “Here’s another service, you can buy from me..” I opened my mouth and wondered aloud, if I could do these things on my own.
– No, was the answer. Social media marketing was allegedly SOOOOOOOO difficult that he would not recommend anyone to do it on their own.
Well okay, I thought that this was enough and shut up.
After the lecture this young speaker came to me and asked when shall I start the co-operation with him.
You can probably guess what I answered 🙂
